We have all heard the saying “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” and often times I have found that to be true. All too many times I have pursued something only to find it is no better than that which I already had which leads to nothing but disappointment and regret. With that in mind I wanted to talk about a lot of the changes that myself and Pixie have been making and the future changes hat we hope to make, as a means of both letting you all know what we are up to and also as a means of me yet again going over it to myself to seek out the answer to the question – is that grass really greener?
Firstly, we have been making a lot of changes in regards to our music – we have a inspiration and have been much more active in our creative work. I finally made the commitment to buying the instruments I wanted to get and have a list of various recording near that I will be acquiring over the coming months so that headway can be made in that area. We hope to have a few meetings with all the others who are interested in our musical venture shortly and then work can begin in earnest. All this of course has had me thinking, had me questioning what I am doing, is this something I really want to commit to, is it something I think I can realistically make something of and this is one of the few things in my life that has had no doubt cast over it. I KNOW that this is something I have always wanted to do and I KNOW that this is something I can make work. What I mean by making it work is seeing through to a point where we are able to perform in at least a semi-professional capacity. Quite a daunting task admittedly but one I eagerly await, a challenge I feel more than ready to step up to and take head on. I find the thought of it being difficult exciting, which is a bloody rare thing for me and something that fills me with hope.
In other areas I have been working on a new piece of fiction inspired by my recent finishing of the twilight saga by Stephanie Meyer. I found the series a fantastic new take on a long overused genre with fresh ideas and some of the best characters I have encountered in a book in a long time. I actually miss them and so no doubt will be reading the books again soon. All the time I was reading them I was becoming more and more sure about revisiting a piece of fiction I have dwindled on for some time, again a story with new take on old themes and the introduction of themes I have yet to see in other fiction, but that’s not to say that they are not out there but i haven’t read them yet.
On a much more life changing note, and the inspiration for writing now, is our decision to pursue the possibilities of emigrating to Canada, more specifically British Columbia. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to live in a place where I can truly find myself where the ability to remove yourself from civilisation at a whim is no so dauntingly impossible. After first mentioning it already a few people have queried by on earth we would want to move there, so far away. What does it have that we don’t have here and what possible benefit could we get from going there. So here I will list some of the various reasons for us going and then talk a little more about what our plans are…
If you are unaware of the natural beauty of B.C (British Columbia) then feast your eyes..
As you can see, not your average place and on the end there you can see a comparison of Manchester (on the end) and Vancouver (next to it), if comparison is a word that can be used, as in all honesty they don’t compare at all. I have never liked Manchester and have been very thankful to Morag and others involved in the LRM (link to which can be found to your right) for shedding light on those small quirks and interesting hidden parts of the city, but for me it is not enough. I need the air, I need the space – I need to be able to lose myself in more than just my mind or my living room.
Another selling point for me the geographical size and population – check this out for a comparison ( ha! the use of that word gets more ludicrous by the sentence)
B.C geographical land mass – 944,735 square kilometers
United Kingdom land mass – 245,000 square kilometers
So as you see BC is over three times the size of the United Kingdom, with that in mind…
BC population in 2001 census – 3,907,738
UK population in 2001 census – 58,789,194
But to quantify that a little clearer so that the difference is more tangible…
Greater Manchester population in 2001 census – 2,547,700
The difference is staggering, for me personally mind blowing – to live in a place that is not so overrun with people you feel you might suffocate at any moment. Not to mention the knock on effect on others areas of society and life that I often have a HUGE issue with such as cars, supermarket domination and constant interference in global politics due to overly aggresive global policies. They live right next door to the USA yet have significantly less involvement with them than the UK does as they take a feirce pride inthe fact that they are independant and strive to maintain that. They never get involved in a conflict unless the majority of the United Nations votes for it, unlike the UK, USA, Germany and France who all get involved whether the UN sanctions it or not – even Russia has more sense than us in that department.
Anyway, stopping on that area before I go into some anti-capitalist rant! As you can hopefully glimpse, life in B.C is nothing like life in the UK and for me it a life that offers me what I hope to a lot more happiness and fulfillment. For those who attended my moot on the reality bomb think on this – the landscape in which our sphere of reality lies is one of the most important things that shapes your life – everything do, everything you think is formed, forged and initiated within the constraints of your landscape – ask yourself are you truly happy with yours?
For me this is the greatest challenge – to break free from the world that is created around us in this country and see that there is a world out there much better than the one we are constrained within here. We are overcrowded, too controlled and force fed bullshit, lies, deceit and corruption like they are par to the course of life in the UK. Well, at least allow me to help with the overcrowded part for when the time comes please consider the UK -4 pop.
To the future!
