The Insights of Fever

Have you ever been in that situation. You start with a cold, stuffy nose, bad chest…the works. You then develop a lovely raging temperature and commit yourself to the couch for the duration, curled up under a cover with a hot drink, some magazines to hand and the all saving television remote.

Then it begins.

All of a sudden the delirium sets in. Everything starts to take a warped twist, rationality seems to go pay someone else a visit for a few days and all sorts of weird and wonderful thoughts stream through your mind. It seems the usual course of action is to wrap up more, ride the storm and wait for it to pass, but being ill recently I decided to immerse myself in my thoughts. I really tried to look at what I was thinking, my pereception of the world around me and how my brain assesed various elements of life from my children playing to the latest conflicts onthe news. I kept a notepad to hand and took notes of what I was thinking – which was actually very hard to do both due to motivation and the ability to stop my hand shaking enough to write something legible.

Yesterday a did a post fever analysis. I took a look at what I had been writing to see if it made any sense and I have to admit I found my writings rather insightful. It seems that my opinions where much the same as they would be if i was feeling well, but my take on them seemed to have much more clarity and a better underestanding of them was demonstrated. In a nutshell being in a fever helped me to very much clarify my standpoint.

So what implication does this have on anything? Well first off dont dismiss something you think when in the midst of a fever, you might just be dismissing something of significant relevance to you. Secondly, make sure your local politicians catch your cold – it might just help them think straight…only kidding…I think – i’ll let you know next time i’m ill.

  1. Lily the Pink Says:

Last time I had a fever was a while ago. I remember having intensely vivid dreams but couldn’t recall what about.

I remember everything seeming slightly out of kilter, bumping into things and dropping things because the physical world was some 5 degrees off the perceptual world and having to take a good run-up to undestand anything anyone was trying to explain to me.

Got to share this quote with you too – Seán just read it out and it kind of (slightly) fits the topic
