The Magpie and the Cat

my life, reality, society 2 Comments »

451197Over the summer we had the blessing of having a pair of blackbirds decide to nest in the ivy just outside our bathroom window. This rare opportunity allowed us to see as clear as day the eggs in the nest and ultimately the babies once they hatched. The children found all this very exciting and would check on the nest each day to see how things where coming along. Once they had hatched the children watched in fascination as they where fed, with more than a few “ewwww’s” each time I would explain that the parent regurgitates the food into the babies mouth. During this time I would explain to them that a long time ago we as humans had to chew the food our babies would eat because they were not able to do so. These small moments led to times of contemplation, making me consider our position in the animal world as a human.

It reminded me that even though we spend all our time trying very hard to escape the animal world, we ultimately cannot escape something that we are bound to, such is the law of nature. Some time later, i was again led to contemplate the laws of nature.

Once the babies had grown to the point where the nest could not host them any more it was time for them to jump ship. We came home one day to a garden full of babies hopping about which was a great and hilarious sight to behold. The laws of nature had there funny moments it seemed, yet soon the harsh reality of nature was to strike as the magpies became aware that their dinner was on the loose in the garden. The parents jumped into action defending the babies with great efficiency so much so that if my counting is up to scratch after day one the magpies left without food. If the magpies are to survive, something would have to die, be it the babies in my garden or the babies somewhere else. A little later I popped my head out the door to see what all the racket was as I could hear the parents going crazy again (they make one hell of a racket!) to see the local cats sporting with one of the babies attempting to grab one away from the crazy parents.

I reacted. I ran out into the garden, chasing the cats down into a corner of the garden that they couldn’t scale the fence of, jug of water in hand. A cat was about to learn that going for the babies in this garden gets you very very wet. Once the cats has jumped ship I sat out back for a bit watching the babies and contemplating what had just transpired. I couldn’t help but ponder why I had reacted the way I had with the cats yet not with the magpies. It didn’t take long for me to realise.

All of life is a part of nature, from a worm, to a magpie, to a human, to a chemical waste silo. Everything is part of nature – nothing can be separate from it regardless of any negative impact it may have. That said, although everything is a part of nature not everything is completely dependant upon it. The example here is the cat given that due to a level of domestication we have removed some of it’s dependence on nature and transferred that dependence onto us. The cats are happy with this arrangement and so are we and so I see no problem there. The problem lies in that although the cat has a known source of food and has no need to source any other, it “decides” to do so. It impacts upon nature beyond it’s need. Some of you cat lovers may say that its in the cats instincts to do so but it is not. A cat doesn’t hunt because it has to, a cat hunts because it can. Also bear in mind that without domestication that cat would not even be there to impact on the local ecosystem so the whole point becomes moot.

In contrast the magpie is wholly dependant on the local ecosystem, a system that nature has tweaked, managed and adapted to suit all its users so that there is usually a balance of food available to the carnivore/omnivore whilst allowing a certain survival rate to perpetuate the species. It is a delicate balance, one that can be thrown into disharmony if outside factors impact too much.

All this then lead me onto a topic I have sat on the fence for some time with now. Being vegetarian. All these thoughts lead me to one simple conclusion.

We are not magpies, we are cats.

We are a domesticated animal with a difference. Due to our natural strength being our intelligence we have taken a different approach and domesticated ourselves. Whilst the advantages of this are extremely self evident the pitfalls are even more so. Self domestication requires self discipline, self control and we have exuded neither. We behave like the cat but in the extreme. We don’t hunt unnecessarily like the cat – we go much further. We capture the parents and cage them, making them have as many babies as we can to support our ever growing numbers. We have perfected this process as it makes the need to hunt them down defunct. The babies are born directly into the cage into which we keep them. Maximum output, minimum effort. We are to be appluaded for such a clever and ingenious idea, and we are to be loathed, feared and condemned for our actual use of it.

The greatest evils in the world are the ones that manage to convince you they don’t exist and most of our world goes through it’s life day by day oblivious to the underworld beneath it that it needs to perpetuate. We are too wrapped up in our obsession with image, instant gratification and pleasure to actually take a moment to make ourselves aware at the true cost of all this. yet once you are aware, as a sentient, intelligent being it is then down to you and you alone to decide if you react to that knowledge or not. Sadly many don’t for denial is much easier. As they say….

…ignorance is bliss… yet we should remember a saying from Guatama Buddha…

“Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”

No excuses, no exceptions – make your choice for you are the author of your life, no other.

Is the grass greener…?

my life, photography, reality, society No Comments »

We have all heard the saying “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” and often times I have found that to be true. All too many times I have pursued something only to find it is no better than that which I already had which leads to nothing but disappointment and regret. With that in mind I wanted to talk about a lot of the changes that myself and Pixie have been making and the future changes hat we hope to make, as a means of both letting you all know what we are up to and also as a means of me yet again going over it to myself to seek out the answer to the question – is that grass really greener?

Firstly, we have been making a lot of changes in regards to our music – we have a inspiration and have been much more active in our creative work. I finally made the commitment to buying the instruments I wanted to get and have a list of various recording near that I will be acquiring over the coming months so that headway can be made in that area. We hope to have a few meetings with all the others who are interested in our musical venture shortly and then work can begin in earnest. All this of course has had me thinking, had me questioning what I am doing, is this something I really want to commit to, is it something I think I can realistically make something of and this is one of the few things in my life that has had no doubt cast over it. I KNOW that this is something I have always wanted to do and I KNOW that this is something I can make work. What I mean by making it work is seeing through to a point where we are able to perform in at least a semi-professional capacity. Quite a daunting task admittedly but one I eagerly await, a challenge I feel more than ready to step up to and take head on.  I find the thought of it being difficult exciting, which is a bloody rare thing for me and something that fills me with hope.

In other areas I have been working on a new piece of fiction inspired by my recent finishing of the twilight saga by Stephanie Meyer. I found the series a fantastic new take on a long overused genre with fresh ideas and some of the best characters I have encountered in a book in a long time. I actually miss them and so no doubt will be reading the books again soon. All the time I was reading them I was becoming more and more sure about revisiting a piece of fiction I have dwindled on for some time, again a story with new take on old themes and the introduction of themes I have yet to see in other fiction, but that’s not to say that they are not out there but i haven’t read them yet.

On a much more life changing note, and the inspiration for writing now, is our decision to pursue the possibilities of emigrating to Canada, more specifically British Columbia. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to live in a place where I can truly find myself where the ability to remove yourself from civilisation at a whim is no so dauntingly impossible. After first mentioning it already a few people have queried by on earth we would want to move there, so far away. What does it have that we don’t have here and what possible benefit could we get from going there. So here I will list some of the various reasons for us going and then talk a little more about what our plans are…

If you are unaware of the natural beauty of B.C (British Columbia) then feast your eyes..

As you can see, not your average place and on the end there you can see a comparison of Manchester (on the end) and Vancouver (next to it), if comparison is a word that can be used, as in all honesty they don’t compare at all. I have never liked Manchester and have been very thankful to Morag and others involved in the LRM (link to which can be found to your right) for shedding light on those small quirks and interesting hidden parts of the city, but for me it is not enough. I need the air, I need the space – I need to be able to lose myself in more than just my mind or my living room.

Another selling point for me the geographical size and population – check this out for a comparison ( ha! the use of that word gets more ludicrous by the sentence)

B.C geographical land mass – 944,735 square kilometers

United Kingdom land mass – 245,000 square kilometers

So as you see BC is over three times the size of the United Kingdom, with that in mind…

BC population in 2001 census – 3,907,738

UK population in 2001 census – 58,789,194

But to quantify that a little clearer so that the difference is more tangible…

Greater Manchester population in 2001 census – 2,547,700

The difference is staggering, for me personally mind blowing – to live in a place that is not so overrun with people you feel you might suffocate at any moment. Not to mention the knock on effect on others areas of society and life that I often have a HUGE issue with such as cars, supermarket domination and constant interference in global politics due to overly aggresive global policies. They live right next door to the USA yet have significantly less involvement with them than the UK does as they take a feirce pride inthe fact that they are independant and strive to maintain that. They never get involved in a conflict unless the majority of the United Nations votes for it, unlike the UK, USA, Germany and France who all get involved whether the UN sanctions it or not – even Russia has more sense than us in that department.

Anyway, stopping on that area before I go into some anti-capitalist rant! As you can hopefully glimpse, life in B.C is nothing like life in the UK and for me it a life that offers me what I hope to a lot more happiness and fulfillment. For those who attended my moot on the reality bomb think on this – the landscape in which our sphere of reality lies is one of the most important things that shapes your life – everything do, everything you think is formed, forged and initiated within the constraints of your landscape – ask yourself are you truly happy with yours?

For me this is the greatest challenge – to break free from the world that is created around us in this country and see that there is a world out there much better than the one we are constrained within here. We are overcrowded, too controlled and force fed bullshit, lies, deceit and corruption like they are par to the course of life in the UK. Well, at least allow me to help with the overcrowded part for when the time comes please consider the UK -4 pop.

To the future!

The Honesty Bomb

society 3 Comments »

Just a post to address a topic I think is going to come into the forefront of worldwide politics in the not too distant future. It is a topic that I am amazed is not referred to as “the problem which must not be named” followed by furtive glances and hushed whispering. It is the bane of all political agendas and the antithesis of economic growth…overpopulation. We have been spoon fed a total load of bollocks over the last 5 years on how all us greedy people are causing no end of problems for the poor people in power, who have to work very hard to come up with policies that will keep us in check and reduce our carbon footprints, promote greener living and encourage recycling. Admittedly, all commendable pursuits, but it is merely treating the symptoms rather than hitting the root of the problem.

WE ARE OVERPOPULATED

There, not so hard to see in writing is it? Try saying it, doesn’t hurt. Why do people balk at the mere mention, not just politicians but also your average Joe? Is it really a problem with no hope of redemption? Nah is it ‘eck – we just can’t we arsed taking on a problem of that magnitude and so we resort to half arsed completely pathetic attempts to make ourselves feel better. This leads to shite like carbon neutral car insurance being offered on the telly box – I absolutely crack my sides laughing every time I see those adverts….if I ever met a person who said they genuinely believed that crap I would literally slap them…no I mean it.

As well as becoming more ecologically aware and green we have to accept that we have a population problem. It is slowly killing us and unless we start to take some form of action to stem the rising tide of people, then the economy, the environment, the education, health service, benefit system, workforce – just add your own to the list there feel free – they will all suffer to the point of collapse. Sociologists are aware that total social breakdown has happened across the globe many times throughout history but it is widely agreed if it were to happen now, with our co-dependency on import and mass overpopulation, the “system” would not cope at all.

It may seem doom and gloom, might even seem far fetched, but it isn’t. Our society cannot handle large scale collapse. We hear economic portends of this nature all the time “housing market close to collapse” being a hype term of the moment, but all to often it is simple media hype. The problem of overpopulation isn’t though. Personally I really cannot wait for said collapse to happen. This pathetic society needs a wake up call. This consumer driven, ceaseless driving isle of utterly lazy bastards needs a nationwide slap, and a slap where it hurts…the source of economy.

Worried yet? No?

Don’t blame you – a simple blog isn’t going to cause a wake up to something like this. No much will open any ones eyes to it, such is the condition we are now in – we don’t pay attention to what is around us unless it hits us where we are bothered, and it will – rest assured of that.

Meanwhile, some interesting pieces of information for you to peruse…

1. The oncoming peaking of global oil production (and subsequent decline of production), along with the peak of North American natural gas production may precipitate this agricultural crisis much sooner than expected. Geologist Dale Allen Pfeiffer claims that coming decades could see spiraling food prices without relief and massive starvation on a global level such as never experienced before.

2. The book The Little Green Handbook reasons that in 2050 about 7.7 billion people would be expected to suffer from illness, lack of adequate sanitation, hunger, and extreme poverty,[9] provided that the high population estimates of year 2050 are realised.

There are also many citations I could post stating that the world will be OK, that the various nations of the world will step up to their responsibilities and make the necessary changes. I for one do not believe that they will alongside many others. Much like that last G8 summit, a lot was said, many promises made and NOT ONE SINGLE ONE has yet been carried out.

The optimistic projections place their trust in a reliance on politicians to do the right thing…

Ye Gods…we’re screwed!
